Electricity suppliers in Belgium

In short

Around fifteen suppliers share the Belgian residential electricity market. Your bill is built from three blocks: the energy itself, the network tariffs set for your distribution grid operator, and regional taxes. Only the first block moves when you change supplier, which is why the differences between suppliers are smaller than the advertising suggests.

What switching supplier does and does not change

The energy component is the only part your supplier sets. It is a meaningful share of the bill but far from all of it, and it is the entirety of what a change of contract can affect.

The network tariffs cover transmission and distribution. They are approved by the regulators and depend on your distribution grid operator, which is assigned by municipality — Fluvius across Flanders, ORES or RESA and others across Wallonia, Sibelga in Brussels. You cannot choose your grid operator and changing supplier does not alter these tariffs by a single cent.

The taxes and levies complete the bill and are set regionally. They differ between Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels, and they are not negotiable either.

This structure is the single most useful thing a newcomer can understand about Belgian energy: you are shopping for one slice of the invoice, not for the invoice.

The EAN code and the supply point

Every electricity supply point in Belgium is identified by an EAN code, an eighteen-digit number printed on your bill and often on the meter cabinet. It identifies the connection, not you, and it stays with the property when you move out.

Any subscription, move or switch is processed against that number. Getting it wrong is how people end up paying for a neighbour's meter, which happens often enough in apartment buildings with several cabinets to be worth checking physically.

When you move in or out, the meter reading on the exact date and a signed handover document between the outgoing and incoming occupant are the two pieces that prevent billing disputes. Photograph the meter on the day, with the display and the serial number visible.

Leaving a contract in Belgium

A residential customer can end an energy contract with one month's notice and no penalty, even on a fixed-term contract. This is a Belgian legal protection with no equivalent in several neighbouring countries, and it changes how much a long contract can hurt you.

Switching supplier never interrupts supply. The physical network, the meter and the grid operator stay the same; the change is administrative and the new supplier handles it. There is no technical visit and no grid operator fee.

The practical consequence is that inertia is the expensive choice. A contract that renews tacitly usually renews on the tariff of the day rather than the one that attracted you, and you can leave it within a month at any time.

Our verdict

As of August 31, 2026, use the official simulators for a personal figure: the federal regulator CREG labels price comparison sites, and each regional regulator runs its own tool — CWaPE in Wallonia, VREG in Flanders, BRUGEL in Brussels. They compute your real annual bill from your consumption and your postcode. This page explains how a Belgian contract is structured; it does not replace those tools.

Frequently asked questions

Which electricity supplier is cheapest in Belgium?

There is no supplier that is cheapest for everyone. The answer depends on your annual consumption, your municipality and your meter type. The official simulators run by CREG and by CWaPE, VREG or BRUGEL compute the real amount for your situation, and that is the only reliable method rather than a national ranking.

Does changing supplier cut off my electricity?

No, never. The change is purely administrative: the cable, the meter and the distribution grid operator are unchanged. There is no interruption of supply, no technical intervention and no fee from the grid operator. Your new supplier handles the procedure with the old one.

Can I leave a fixed-term energy contract early?

Yes. A Belgian residential customer can terminate an energy contract with one month's notice and no early-termination penalty, including a contract sold for one, two or three years. The stated duration binds the supplier to its price; it does not bind you to stay.

Why is my bill different from my neighbour's?

Three likely reasons: a different consumption, a contract signed on another date and therefore at another tariff, or a different distribution grid operator if you are not in the same municipality. Distribution tariffs vary appreciably from one grid operator to another, which produces gaps between otherwise similar households.

What is an EAN code and where do I find it?

It is the eighteen-digit number identifying your electricity supply point. It appears on your energy bill and usually on or near the meter. Every subscription, move and switch is processed against it, so check it physically in a building with several meters before signing anything.
