Ethias or AXA: which car insurance to choose

Updated on 4 plans compared
In short

Ethias and AXA cover the same compulsory base — third-party liability — and both offer partial and full omnium. The structural difference lies in the channel: Ethias distributes directly, through its own agencies and online, while AXA relies mainly on a network of independent brokers.

Two distribution channels, two ways of being advised

A Belgian insurance broker is entered in the register kept by the FSMA and bound by duties of information and advice. They are paid by the company but act on your mandate, which is what allows them to compare contracts across insurers.

Direct sale removes that layer. You obtain a price by simulation or by telephone, and you then deal with the company's own services throughout the life of the contract.

The choice therefore depends less on the insurer's name than on your own availability. A driver who enjoys comparing and manages their own paperwork loses little by going direct.

What does not depend on the channel

The framework is identical. Third-party liability is compulsory either way, the bonus-malus degree follows the driver, and the claims certificate is issued on the same terms.

After a material accident with an identified third party, Belgian companies apply a direct indemnification convention: your own insurer compensates you and settles between insurers afterwards.

The same remedies are open in both configurations: the company's complaints service first, then the Ombudsman for insurance, free of charge.

How to decide concretely

Request both quotes on an identical specification: same formula, same franchise, same presence of driver cover, assistance and legal protection. Anything else is not a comparison.

Premiums in this branch are built on a profile — vehicle, address, bonus-malus degree, annual mileage — so a published price says little about what you will be quoted.

Commercial arguments are not contractual guarantees. Only the general and particular conditions handed to you by the insurer determine what is covered.

Our verdict

The decision turns on the support you want at the moment of a claim. A broker is paid by the company but mandated by you: they put several contracts into competition at each renewal and argue your file. Direct sale removes that layer, and transfers the work to you in exchange for a shorter circuit.

Frequently asked questions

Who compensates me after an accident with a third party?

Your own insurer, under the direct indemnification convention applied by Belgian companies for material damage with an identified third party. The insurers settle between themselves afterwards, which is why the channel makes no difference here.

Does going through a broker cost more?

The broker is paid by the company rather than by you, through the commission built into the premium. What you gain is someone mandated to put several contracts into competition at each renewal and to argue your file after a claim.

Can I switch from one to the other mid-year?

A Belgian car policy is normally terminated at annual expiry with notice. Termination outside that is possible in defined situations, such as after a claim or when the risk changes — the conditions set out which and with what notice.

How do I compare two quotes properly?

On an identical specification: same formula, same franchise, and the same presence or absence of driver cover, assistance and legal protection. Premiums are built on your profile, so only two quotes on the same basis mean anything.
