Car loan for a used vehicle in Belgium
Used vehicles carry higher loan rates in Belgium than new ones, because the vehicle's value falls faster and is harder to assess. Several lenders also apply an age limit to the vehicle being financed.

Why the rates are higher
The vehicle serves as the underlying value, and on a used car that value falls less predictably. The lender's risk rises and the rate follows.
The premium over a new-car loan is usually moderate, but it grows with the vehicle's age. Past a threshold — seven or eight years at several Belgian lenders — no car-loan rate is offered at all.
Buying from a dealer or from a private seller
From a dealer, financing is routine: invoice, release of funds, often paid directly to the seller. The proof of purpose exists by itself.
A private sale requires a proper sales agreement showing the vehicle identification number, the mileage and the price. Not every lender accepts that, and those that do examine it more closely.
Ask about this before committing anything to the seller. Reserving a vehicle the bank will not finance is an expensive and common mistake.
What to check beyond the price
The Car-Pass is compulsory on any Belgian sale of a used vehicle and documents its mileage history. Do not buy without it.
Check the roadworthiness test too: a sale between private individuals requires a report with a sale certificate no more than two months old.
Finally, budget for what comes after the purchase — registration, road tax, insurance, foreseeable maintenance. These belong in the budget, not in a later surprise.
Our verdict
Establish before the viewing whether the lender will finance your particular vehicle: age, mileage and the question of dealer or private sale all decide it. An agreement after the handshake is not an agreement, and a deposit you cannot recover is an avoidable mistake.
Frequently asked questions
Is a used-car loan more expensive?
Somewhat. A used vehicle's value is harder to assess and falls less predictably, which raises the lender's risk. The premium is usually moderate but grows with the age of the vehicle.
Is there an age limit on the vehicle?
At several Belgian lenders yes, often around seven or eight years. Beyond that no car-loan rate is offered, leaving only a personal loan at a considerably higher rate.
Can I finance a purchase from a private seller?
At several lenders yes, against a proper sales agreement showing the vehicle identification number, mileage and price. Clarify it before committing to the seller, because not every lender accepts private sales.
What documents must a used-car purchase include?
The Car-Pass, compulsory on any Belgian sale, and for a private sale a roadworthiness report with a sale certificate no more than two months old. Do not buy without both.
