Gas prices in Belgium
The energy component of Belgian gas contracts runs from 4.64 c€/kWh to 7.24 c€/kWh, on top of which every contract adds a fixed annual standing charge of roughly 145 € to 210 €. Distribution tariffs and levies then apply identically whichever supplier you choose.

The three blocks of a Belgian gas bill
The energy component is what your supplier charges for the gas itself. It is the block published in the table above and the only one that varies from one supplier to the next.
The distribution and transport tariffs pay for the network that brings gas to your meter. They are set by your grid operator, approved by the regional regulator, and vary substantially between municipalities — but never between suppliers at a single address.
The levies and VAT are set by the federal state and the regions. VAT on residential gas has moved several times in recent years, which is one reason a bill from two years ago is a poor guide to what you pay now.
Why cubic metres and kilowatt-hours are not interchangeable
Belgian gas meters measure volume in cubic metres, but gas is billed on energy in kilowatt-hours. The conversion uses a calorific factor that depends on the composition of the gas actually delivered on your grid, and it is recalculated periodically.
That factor sits somewhere around 10 to 11 kilowatt-hours per cubic metre, which means a rough conversion carries an error of several percent — comfortably enough to reverse the ranking between two contracts priced within half a cent of each other. Use the kilowatt-hour figure printed on your settlement invoice.
What moves the price you are quoted
Gas prices in Europe are set on wholesale markets that react to storage levels, weather forecasts and supply routes. Suppliers pass those movements through with a delay that depends on the formula: immediately on a dynamic tariff, monthly or quarterly on a variable one, and not at all during the term of a fixed one.
Seasonality matters too. Wholesale gas is normally cheaper in summer, when storage is being filled, than in the middle of winter. Signing a fixed contract in August and signing the same contract in January are not the same decision.
Reading the table for your own household
The table is sorted by the energy component, which gives the right order for anyone who heats with gas. If gas serves only your cooking, the order changes: run the full calculation on the first few lines and let the standing charge do its work.
One figure is worth writing down before you start — your annual consumption in kilowatt-hours. Everything else on this page is arithmetic once you have it.
Our verdict
A price per cubic metre tells you nothing, because it depends on a conversion factor you do not choose. A price per kilowatt-hour tells you half the story, because the standing charge is missing from it. The comparable figure is the one you compute yourself: annual consumption × energy price + standing charge.
Frequently asked questions
What does a kilowatt-hour of gas cost in Belgium?
The energy component of the contracts in our survey runs from 4.64 c€/kWh to 7.24 c€/kWh. That figure excludes the annual standing charge, the distribution tariffs and the levies, which together typically make up a little over half of what you actually pay.
Why is my bill higher than the price per kilowatt-hour suggests?
Because the energy component is only one of three blocks. Distribution and transport tariffs, regional levies and VAT are added on top, and they are set by your grid operator and your region rather than by your supplier — which is precisely why they cannot be compared between contracts.
How do I convert cubic metres into kilowatt-hours?
Multiply by the calorific conversion factor for your grid, which is around 10 to 11 but is recalculated periodically and printed on your invoice. Because the factor is neither constant nor identical everywhere, a rough conversion is precise enough for an order of magnitude and not precise enough to choose between two close contracts.
Does the standing charge really change the ranking?
For a small consumption, yes, decisively. The standing charges in our survey span about 65 € a year. At 1 000 kilowatt-hours, no realistic difference in unit price comes close to that; at 20 000 kilowatt-hours it is a rounding error next to the energy cost.
