Cancelling car insurance in Belgium

Updated on
In short

A Belgian car insurance contract runs for a year and renews tacitly. It ends at its annual expiry by written notification sent within the notice period set in the contract, generally three months. Early exits exist, notably after a claim or a change of risk.

Steps

  1. Find the annual expiry date

It is in your particular conditions and on your renewal notice. It is rarely 1 January, and assuming otherwise is how people miss a year.

  2. Check the exact notice period

The contract states it. Three months is common but not universal, and the deadline is counted back from the expiry date rather than forward from today.

  3. Notify by a means that leaves proof

Registered post, or whatever written channel the contract designates. A telephone call cannot be produced later, and disputes about cancellation are disputes about proof.

  4. Take out the new contract before the old one ends

Arrange the new cover to start the day the old one stops. Driving uninsured in Belgium is a criminal offence, not an administrative oversight.

  5. Request your claims certificate

Ask your outgoing insurer for it before you leave. It documents your history and it is what the next insurer actually reads.

The mid-year exits

After a claim, both parties usually have a right to terminate within a period set by the contract. That right belongs to the insurer too, which is worth knowing.

On a change of risk — a different vehicle, a move, a change in use — the contract can be revised or ended. Declare the change rather than letting the file drift out of date.

And on a tariff increase imposed outside indexation, the contract generally opens a right to terminate. Read the notification: it usually says so, in small type.

When nobody will insure you

Belgium operates a tariff-setting body for compulsory motor liability, intended for drivers the market declines. It exists precisely for this situation.

It covers third-party liability, which is the part the law requires. It is not a comprehensive solution, and it is not meant to be.

Before reaching it, ask each refusal to be motivated in writing. Insurers must be able to justify their acceptance criteria, and several refusals do not survive that request.

The mistake never to make

Cancelling before the new contract is confirmed. A gap of a single day is a day of uninsured driving, with consequences out of proportion to the convenience.

Get the new insurer's written confirmation, with its start date, before sending anything to the outgoing one.

And keep the green card or its digital equivalent accessible in the vehicle during the changeover, so a check does not become a problem you have to argue about later.

Frequently asked questions

What notice is needed to cancel at expiry?

The period set in your contract, generally three months before the annual expiry date, counted back from that date. Check the particular conditions rather than assuming, because the period is not identical at every insurer.

Is an email enough to cancel?

Only if the contract designates a written channel that includes it. What matters is producing proof later, so registered post remains the safest route where the contract does not clearly accept something else.

Can I cancel after selling my car?

Deregister the plate first. In Belgium the plate is tied to the holder, so the insurance obligation continues while it remains registered, whoever is driving the vehicle.

What if no insurer will accept me?

Belgium operates a tariff-setting body for compulsory motor liability, intended for drivers the market declines. Before turning to it, ask each refusal to be motivated in writing — insurers must be able to justify their acceptance criteria.
