Tethering, the decisive feature in a student room
Sharing the phone's connection with a laptop is how a great many students actually get online, particularly in the weeks between moving in and getting a fixed line installed.
Most Belgian operators allow it, but not all, and some count tethered traffic differently or cap it separately. The clause is in the terms and it is rarely mentioned in the advertising.
Where tethering is allowed and the allowance is generous, a mobile plan can genuinely replace a fixed line for a ten-month stay — which removes an entire contract from the budget.
Erasmus and longer stays outside Belgium
Inside the EU, roam-like-at-home rules mean your Belgian allowance travels with you, but they are built for travel rather than residence. Operators may apply a fair-use policy on prolonged use abroad.
For a full semester in another EU country, check what your operator's fair-use threshold is and after how many months it triggers. Being cut off mid-semester is a foreseeable and avoidable problem.
Outside the EU, roaming charges apply in full and are the single most common source of shocking student phone bills. Buy a local SIM or an add-on before departure, not after the first invoice.
Prepaid or contract
Prepaid has no commitment, no credit check and no surprise bill, which suits an uncertain year. It costs more per gigabyte.
A contract is cheaper per gigabyte and can include a subsidised handset. In Belgium any consumer contract can be cancelled on one month's notice without penalty, so the commitment is lighter than it appears.
What can still be charged after early cancellation is the remaining value of a subsidised device — which is exactly why a plan without a handset is usually the better fit for a ten-month need.
Our verdict
Buy for tethering, not for the headline data figure. In a student room the phone is frequently the internet connection, and a plan that forbids or throttles tethering is unusable however many gigabytes it carries. Check that clause first, then the allowance, then the price.
