Outstanding balance insurance premiums
Premiums for Belgian outstanding balance insurance depend on age, duration, smoker status, health and the share of capital covered. Two quotes are only comparable when every one of those parameters is identical.

What drives the premium
Age and duration dominate everything else. The same cover taken at fifty costs a multiple of what it costs at thirty, because the risk being insured is genuinely different.
Smoker status follows, with one of the widest gaps in insurance pricing.
Health can add a loading, an exclusion, or a refusal. Belgian rules frame a right to be forgotten for certain past conditions, which is worth invoking rather than assuming it applies automatically.
The covered share scales the whole thing: covering more of the capital costs proportionally more.
Single premium or periodic premium
A single premium is paid once at the start, often financed within the mortgage itself. It costs less in total, but it is money borrowed and therefore carries interest across the whole term.
A periodic premium spreads the cost across the years. It totals more, but it is not capitalised into the loan and it is far easier to stop if you switch insurer.
The flexibility argument usually decides it. A single premium financed into a mortgage is difficult to unwind if a better contract appears in year five — and better contracts do appear.
Comparing quotes honestly
Same capital, same duration, same covered share, same options, same declared health information. Change any one of those and the cheaper quote may simply be the thinner cover.
Check specifically whether disability cover is included or optional in each quote. It is a common source of apparent price differences that are not price differences at all.
Then read the exclusions side by side. Two contracts at the same premium can differ substantially in what they refuse to pay for.
Reviewing it later
This contract runs for two decades and almost nobody revisits it. Stopping smoking, a resolved health condition, or a partial early repayment of the mortgage can all justify a review.
A partial repayment in particular reduces the capital at risk, and the premium should follow. It does not follow by itself — you have to ask.
Our verdict
Get at least three quotes on strictly identical parameters, including your lender's. The spread between insurers on the same profile is large enough to justify the afternoon it takes, and this is a contract you will hold for twenty years without ever thinking about it again.
Frequently asked questions
What does outstanding balance insurance cost in Belgium?
It depends almost entirely on age, duration, smoker status, health and the share of capital covered, so no single figure describes the market. What matters is getting at least three quotes on strictly identical parameters, including your lender's.
Single premium or periodic premium?
A single premium costs less in total but is usually financed within the mortgage, so it carries interest and is hard to unwind. A periodic premium totals more but stays flexible if you switch insurer later — which the twenty-year horizon makes likely.
Why do two quotes differ so much?
Often because they are not the same cover. Check whether disability is included or optional, whether the covered share matches, and how the exclusions compare. Two contracts at the same premium can refuse to pay in quite different circumstances.
Can I lower the premium during the contract?
Yes, in several situations: stopping smoking, a resolved health condition, or a partial early repayment that reduces the capital at risk. None of these triggers a reduction automatically — you have to write to the insurer and ask.
