Small loans in Belgium

Updated on 11 plans compared11 providers
In short

Belgian lenders tier their rates by amount, and small sums carry the highest. Processing a loan costs roughly the same whether it is €3,000 or €30,000, and spread across a small amount that fixed effort weighs far more heavily.

Why small amounts cost more

Every application generates the same work: creditworthiness assessment, a query to the central credit register, drawing up the contract, administering it until the final instalment. None of that scales with the amount.

On €25,000 those costs are a rounding error. On €3,000 they are a visible share of the price. That is why APRs rise as the sum falls, and why no advertised headline rate applies to a small loan.

Term before lender

Run both before settling on a lender. On a small amount, shortening the term works twice: fewer months accruing interest, and frequently a better rate as well.

Belgian law also allows early repayment at any time. The compensation is capped, and on a small amount it is correspondingly small — which makes early repayment almost always worthwhile here.

What not to finance with credit

A short-term cash squeeze is not a credit case. An instalment loan of €2,000 ties you up for two or three years and appears in the central credit register, which affects every later application.

Look at the interest-free alternatives first: a payment arrangement with the creditor, a retailer's instalment plan with no surcharge, or postponing the purchase. None of them appears in the register.

Our verdict

On a small amount the term is a bigger lever than the lender. On €5,000, the gap between forty-eight months and twenty-four separates more money than the gap between the best and worst rate in the table. Take the shortest term your budget carries, then shop the rate.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a small loan more expensive?

Because processing costs barely scale with the amount. Assessing creditworthiness, querying the credit register and administering the contract cost roughly the same at €3,000 as at €30,000, and spread over the smaller sum they lift the APR noticeably.

From what amount do advertised rates apply?

Usually from €15,000 to €20,000, depending on the lender. Below that a different tier of the rate card applies. Always request a quote for exactly the amount you need rather than relying on the advertised figure.

Can I repay a small loan early?

Yes, at any time. The compensation is capped by law and correspondingly low on a small amount. Early repayment is almost always worthwhile here, because the interest saved exceeds the capped compensation.

Does a small loan appear in the credit register?

Yes. Every Belgian consumer credit is registered with the National Bank's central register and stays visible for up to a year after the final instalment. A small loan today can affect a mortgage application tomorrow.
