Car insurance for older drivers in Belgium
In Belgium age alone justifies neither a refusal nor a loading: an insurer must be able to justify the criteria it applies and must publish those governing its acceptance policy. What changes with age is usually the use of the vehicle, not the risk of insuring it.

What age changes, and what it does not
It does not change your bonus-malus, which reflects your claims history and nothing else. A long claim-free record is an asset that does not expire.
It does not entitle an insurer to load your premium simply because of a birthday. Belgian rules require insurers to be able to justify their segmentation criteria and to publish those governing acceptance, pricing and cover.
What genuinely changes is often use: fewer kilometres, more local journeys, sometimes a second vehicle becoming unnecessary. Those are all reasons to renegotiate a contract downward, not upward.
Refusal, cancellation and remedies
An insurer may decline a risk, but the reasoning must be based on published criteria. Ask for the refusal and its ground in writing — that request alone changes several outcomes.
Where third-party cover proves impossible to obtain from any insurer, Belgium operates a tariff-setting body for compulsory motor liability, which exists precisely for drivers the market turns away.
For any dispute with an insurer or broker, the Ombudsman for insurance handles complaints free of charge. It is an effective route and it is used far less than it should be.
Adapting the contract to changing use
If annual mileage has dropped substantially, ask for the premium to be recalculated. Several Belgian insurers price partly on declared mileage and will not revisit it unless you raise it.
Consider whether full omnium still makes sense on a vehicle that is now older and driven less. The compensable value falls; the premium often does not follow on its own.
And check who else drives the car. An occasional driver clause, or a named additional driver, can be cheaper than leaving the situation undeclared — and undeclared drivers are a common cause of reduced payouts.
Our verdict
Age is not a lawful reason on its own, and you have remedies. If you are refused or cancelled, ask for the reason in writing and take it to the Ombudsman for insurance, who handles exactly these disputes free of charge. Many refusals do not survive being asked to justify themselves.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Belgian insurer refuse me because of my age?
Not on age alone. Insurers must be able to justify the criteria they apply and publish those governing acceptance, pricing and cover. Ask for the refusal and its ground in writing, then take it to the Ombudsman for insurance.
Does my bonus-malus change as I get older?
No. The scale reflects your claims history and nothing else, so a long claim-free record remains an asset regardless of age. Age does not move your position on it in either direction.
What if no insurer will cover me?
Belgium operates a tariff-setting body for compulsory motor liability, which exists for drivers the market declines. It is a real remedy and it applies to third-party cover, which is the part the law requires you to hold.
Should I keep omnium on an older car?
Compare the annual premium plus franchise against what the insurer would pay out today. If mileage has also dropped, ask for the premium to be recalculated — several Belgian insurers price partly on declared mileage and will not revisit it unprompted.
