Yuzzu or Ethias: comparing two direct insurers

Updated on 6 plans compared
In short

Yuzzu and Ethias both distribute their car policies without an independent broker: the price comes from an online simulation or by telephone, and the relationship is with the company directly. The channel being comparable, the decision rests on the content of the contract.

What direct sale transfers to you

Without an intermediary, you are the one who re-tenders the contract, keeps the documents and builds the file after an accident. That is real work, and it is work a broker would otherwise do.

The company remains bound by the conduct rules applicable to insurance distribution, supervised by the FSMA, and by its obligation to hand you the general conditions before the contract is concluded.

In exchange the circuit is short: a single point of contact, online procedures, and often immediate subscription. It suits people who are comfortable reading a policy themselves.

The clauses to set side by side

The franchise first: a fixed amount, a percentage of the damage, or a franchise waived if the repair goes through an approved network. Two similar premiums can leave very different amounts payable.

The depreciation next, if you take an omnium: how long the value stays guaranteed, then the rate at which it falls. On a vehicle kept several years, this clause decides more money than the premium does.

The driver cover last, with its capital and its exclusions: it compensates your own injuries when you are at fault, and it is the guarantee most often absent from a cheap quote.

What the data shows, and what it does not

Car premiums in Belgium are built on a profile, so a published figure describes a reference case rather than your case. That is a property of the branch, not a gap in the comparison.

The figures documented in this vertical illustrate the order of magnitude of the market, nothing more. They are not a quote and they are not transferable to another profile.

The only useful step is therefore a double simulation, at strictly identical guarantees, followed by a reading of the general conditions.

Our verdict

Comparing these two on premium alone makes no sense: both simulators return an amount built on your profile, your commune and your bonus-malus degree. The franchise and the depreciation formula determine the outcome far more than the monthly figure does.

Frequently asked questions

Can I negotiate a contract without a broker?

You can request adjustments — franchise level, optional guarantees, payment frequency — which changes the premium. What you lose is someone mandated to put several insurers into competition on your behalf at each renewal.

Who do I contact just after an accident?

The company's claims service directly, within the deadline set by the contract, with the completed European accident statement. Without a broker, assembling and following the file is your responsibility.

What if the company cancels my contract?

A Belgian insurer may terminate in the situations set out in the contract and the law, with notice. You then need cover elsewhere before driving again, and where the market declines you, the tariff-setting body for compulsory motor liability exists.

Which clauses matter most?

The franchise, the depreciation formula if you take an omnium, and the presence and capital of driver cover. On a vehicle kept several years, the depreciation clause decides more money than the difference in premium.
