In short

No Belgian operator still sells television on its own: it comes bundled with an internet subscription, and often with a mobile line. The prices below are therefore pack prices, and the features column says what each one contains. Packs in our survey run from €40.99 to €122.99 a month.

Why television is never sold alone

Belgian television reaches homes over the same cable or fibre that carries the internet. Selling the two separately would mean maintaining two commercial products on one physical connection, and no operator does it.

The practical consequence is that a TV price on its own does not exist. What exists is the difference between a pack and the internet subscription underneath it — and that difference is the only honest measure of what television costs you.

It is also why comparing packs on headline price alone misleads. A pack at 56 € with 500 Mbit/s and one at 45 € with 100 Mbit/s are not competing on television at all; they are competing on internet speed.

Decoder or app

The classic setup is a set-top box connected to the television. It gives the full channel line-up, the programme guide and recording, and it is usually included in the pack price rather than rented separately.

The newer setup delivers the same channels through an app on a connected television. It costs less, needs no box, and typically carries a narrower line-up.

Where an operator sells both at the same internet speed, the gap between them is the honest price of the box — and in our survey that gap is 7 € a month, on two separate pairs of offers.

Sport is the real variable

None of the packs in our survey includes premium football rights in its advertised monthly price. Belgian broadcasting rights are sold as a separate option, on top of any pack, by whichever operator holds them for the season.

That option costs more than the difference between most packs. If you watch the Belgian league or the Champions League, decide on the sport option first and treat the pack underneath it as a commodity — because that is what it is.

Rights also move between operators between seasons. A pack chosen for its sport line-up can lose that line-up at the next renewal, which is an argument for short commitments if football is why you are subscribing.

Our verdict

The question that decides your bill is not which pack has the most channels, but how much linear television you still actually watch. Put the pack next to the same operator's internet-only subscription: the gap is what television costs you. If that gap buys channels you never open, streaming plus a bare internet line is cheaper and you lose nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy television without internet in Belgium?

In practice, no. Every major Belgian operator sells television bundled with an internet subscription, because both travel over the same connection. What varies is whether a mobile line is bundled in as well, and how many channels the pack includes.

How much does the television part actually cost?

Take the pack price and subtract the same operator's internet-only subscription at the same speed. That difference is what television costs you, and it is usually between 8 and 15 € a month — considerably less than the headline pack price suggests.

Is football included in a TV pack?

No. Belgian premium football rights are sold as a paid option on top of a pack, by whichever operator holds them for that season. No pack in our survey includes them in its advertised monthly price.

Do I need the set-top box?

Only if you want the full line-up, the programme guide and recording. Several operators deliver a narrower selection of channels through an app on a connected television for less. Where the same operator sells both at the same speed, the box costs 7 € a month in our survey.
